The Buteyko Method aims to normalise the breathing to ensure that the correct combination of oxygen and carbon dioxide are present in the body. If a person suffers from a breathing related condition, it is plausable that they are not breathing correctly. Studies have shown that the Buteyko method can be used to sucessfully treat a range of conditions, including:
Anyone from the age of three years can learn how to breathe properly with the Buteyko Method. Depending on your progress, you'll find you can practice Buteyko's method with little or no intrusion to your normal routine. Most people find that they can enjoy a level of health and fitness they previously thought impossible.
The method is taught by a qualified, certified practitioner in one of two ways. Either
- in small classes over a period of approximately 10 hours, normally taking place over a weekend OR
- By Skype with webcam on a one2one basis. You will be required to adhere to some basic lifestyle changes and to practise breathing exercises two to four times a day in the weeks following the course. Please see the section "Buteyko Course Content" for more information.
It is important that you find an experienced, qualified practitioner. Always check the size of the class and how many hours of tuition you will be receiving. It is essential that you know what will be happening after your course. Will the practitioner be offering follow up support?
Correct breathing is essential to good health. Optimising your oxygen and carbon dioxide levels will provide great health benefits. If you are an asthmatic, a Buteyko breathing course will give you a better understanding of what causes asthma and how the drugs work, as well as the ability to reduce your dependency on drugs. Yes. It can be taught to children as young as three years old. The earlier we learn how to breathe correctly, the less we will rely drugs with known side effects. Please see the section "Buteyko and Children".
The Buteyko Method teaches the importance of breathing through the nose, how to practice simple breathing exercises and adopt lifestyle guidelines aimed at promoting good health. You are advised not to alter medications without the consent of a registered physician. Tell your doctor that you are taking the course so that he/she may monitor your progress. Most doctors are pleased to see their patients reliance on drugs of any kind reduced or diminished.
